How to Cite an Article in an Essay — MLA and APA In-Text.
Locate the name or names of the author or authors of the book you wish to cite. MLA requires an in-text citation as close to the information you are borrowing as possible. In the text of your paper, include the author's last name and the page number(s) where the information you are using is located in the book.
Citing an essay within a book requires proper formatting both within the text of your paper and on the References page.
In Harvard referencing, you simply use the same citation each time you cite a source. So if you cite a 2007 book by Smith on pages 1 and 30 of an essay, you would just use the citation (Smith, 2007) on both. As long as you’re only citing one book by Smith from 2007, the reader will then be able to look up the full details in the reference list.
Indicating your citations in the essay’s body is meant to be as short and as readable as possible. It’s quite different from the references pages where you indicate tons of details about the source. In an MLA-formatted essay, the title of a book should appear in italics. In the case of a handwritten essay, the title of the book should be underlined. Novels, textbooks and anthologies should all be italicized, while portions of these books, including chapters, short stories and poems, are noted within quotes.
Most versions of Harvard will require you to give the full book details for each chapter you cite from an edited book. Each entry would begin with the author of the chapter, not the editor, and you do not need to list the overall volume separately.
The HARVARD system cites the author's surname and year of publication in the text, e.g. (Bond, 2004), and provides a reference list (of these citations), in alphabetical order by author, at the end of the assignment. So how to cite a book in an essay according to MLA? Write the last name of the author followed by a comma and the first name followed by a period. Then put the essay name in quotations (the period must be inside the last one) and make the first letters of words capital. Write the title in italics (if you hand write, then just underline it).
